The Significance of the Placement

While working at Auslaw Partners (‘the Firm’), I assisted the lawyers with everyday tasks to the best of my ability, and participated in all induction and training relevant to my allocated tasks. The Firm expected me to exhibit a professional and courteous attitude when dealing with the Firm, its clients, employees, suppliers and other stakeholders, which I did to the best of my abilities.

My tasks were separated into two categories. The first category consisted of legal tasks to assist the Firm’s Property Law Department, which included case law research, document review, document filling, and client communication. The second category consisted of IT oriented tasks to implement the Firm’s new legal document portal, which included webpage translation, webpage backend design and implementation, and webpage coding.

Both categories are significant for the same reason: to facilitate the timely provision of legal advice. On one hand, by assisting the Firm’s lawyers, I enable them to develop more efficient rapport with the client. Similarly, by developing the Firm’s online legal document portal, clients are able to purchase relevant legal document templates at a lesser cost, and are also able to utilise the client intake forms to shorten the time for them to be forthcoming with relevant information. Ultimately, both categories are intended to improve the legal advice provided.

Tasks, Environment and People

Task

My placement takes place Wednesdays and Fridays from 9AM – 5:30PM every week, February to May. This was not be a fixed schedule. In order to ensure the placement did not clash with my university schedule, my immediate supervisor Huiming Lin made amendments to my placement dates according to my university priorities. Auslaw Partners provided me with the login to Actionstep for the access of client information, and WordPress for the backend edit of the webpages. Additionally, the Firm hosted multiple LexisNexis workshops to teach me more about the advanced research methods of CaseBase. In terms of legal assistance tasks, the assigned lawyers provided me with the detailed instructions and documents needed for the task, such as the client contract to complete the lease agreement review.

Environment and People

As we emerge from the pandemic, the pressure from the legal profession and the pandemic induced working circumstances have blurred the boundaries between the work and non-work life, generating prolonged periods of stress with little to no relief. This also has a similar effect on students, where the restricted life-space imposed by the pandemic renders the spatial separation between the placement and university work very difficult, and puts us in a state of perpetual immersive multitasking. It in turn becomes arduous to manage the competing priorities. Consequently, I tend to find distraction to escape from the overloading stress.

Auslaw Partners had numerous support systems in house. Huiming directly monitored my work throughout the placement, and was well placed to regularly discuss my work and its impact on my wellbeing. The Firm also had a more lenient absence policy, where I could prioritise university work. I was able to give one week’s notice to take a leave if there is university work, I intended to focus on. This made the internship experience a lot more enjoyable on top of the university work, and I was able to focus more on the task at hand.

Everyone at the Auslaw Partners Brisbane city office was very friendly and were always happy to answer my questions. Additionally, everyone was hardworking and passionate, which gave me profound motivation and inspiration. Julius Kho gave me great insight into the legal profession through our numerous meaningful conversations, and offered me assistance throughout the first half of my internship. Neal Yang and Nancy Wang provided me with the legal perspective of criminal law and family law respectively, which was very intriguing to learn about. Jacky Li helped me to familiarise with the workspace environment, and with various tasks along the way. We became good friends during the internship, where I hope to maintain this friendship in the future.

Conclusion

Overall, my stay at Auslaw Partners has been a meaningful part of my journey in my legal career thus far. I learned something new every day, from office culture to legal knowledge. I hope to carry on this legacy to my future endeavours. The following is my internship diary to document my workload for each day.
